Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 built by Coinbase, built for USDC transfers with near-zero fees and native Coinbase integration.
Base costs $0.001 per transaction with 2-second settlement — the cheapest Ethereum L2, built natively into Coinbase.
A Base remittance works in three steps: (1) the sender buys USDC on a supported on-ramp exchange using their local currency; (2) the USDC travels across the Base network, settling ~2 seconds with a network fee of $0.001000 regardless of amount; (3) the recipient sells USDC on a local off-ramp exchange for their local currency and withdraws to their bank account.
RemitRoutes measures the total all-in cost of this path — on-ramp fee + network fee + off-ramp spread — alongside traditional providers for every supported corridor. No signup required to compare.

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain developed by Coinbase, the largest US cryptocurrency exchange. It uses Optimism's OP Stack technology to process transactions off-chain while settling on Ethereum mainnet. Base is specifically designed for USDC transfers, making it a practical choice for remittances.
Base is an open blockchain that anyone can use. Coinbase offers the most direct path — send USDC from Coinbase to Base with zero withdrawal fees and instant processing. Other exchanges are gradually adding Base support, including VALR in South Africa.
Base uses Optimistic Rollup technology to batch thousands of transactions together before posting them to Ethereum. This spreads the Ethereum gas cost across many users, resulting in individual transaction fees of just $0.001. The Coinbase team has also tuned Base specifically for USDC efficiency.
Base exchange support is growing. Currently, Coinbase natively supports Base, and VALR (South Africa) accepts Base deposits. As the network matures, more off-ramp exchanges are expected to add Base support. For corridors where Base is not supported at the off-ramp, consider Stellar or Solana.
