What is PayNow? Singapore Instant Payment System Explained

PayNow is Singapore's real-time retail payment system that allows instant SGD transfers between bank accounts using a mobile number, NRIC/FIN, or UEN (for businesses). Launched in 2017 by the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), PayNow is one of Asia's most adopted instant payment systems. It is also interconnected with India's UPI and Malaysia's DuitNow for cross-border transfers.

How PayNow works

PayNow is linked to a bank account and can be accessed using a mobile number (for personal accounts), NRIC/FIN (Singapore residents), or UEN (businesses). Transfers are free for most banks, immediate, and 24/7. All major Singapore banks participate: DBS/POSB, OCBC, UOB, Standard Chartered, Citibank, and others.

PayNow for international remittances

Singapore's large foreign worker population (construction, domestic workers) heavily uses PayNow to receive salary before sending abroad. PayNow serves as the receiving mechanism for Singapore-based workers who then use Wise, Remitly, or MoneyGram to remit to home countries.

PayNow cross-border links

PayNow is linked to India's UPI (since 2023) for instant SGD-to-INR transfers. The link allows Singapore-based Indians to send money home through bank apps instantly. PayNow is also connected to Malaysia's DuitNow (since 2022) for SGD-to-MYR transfers.

PayNow vs international wire

PayNow handles domestic SGD movements instantly and for free. International transfers still require separate services (Wise, SWIFT, digital asset rails). The PayNow-UPI link is the exception — it enables genuine cross-border instant settlement.
