$432 — Estimated annual savings for a $500/month sender switching from bank wire to Wise
Log into each provider you used and download your transaction history. For each transfer, add the stated fee plus the FX markup (mid-market rate × amount sent, minus what your recipient received). Sum across all transfers to get your true annual spend. Most bank wire users are surprised to find their all-in cost was 8–12% of total sent.
Switch as soon as you've verified a better option — every month you delay costs real money. The 'wait until January' instinct is loss aversion, not rational planning. A single $500 transfer through a bank wire vs. Wise saves $30–50 immediately. If you send monthly, waiting three months costs $90–150 in unnecessary fees.
For most corridors, USDC stablecoins sent on Stellar, Tron, or Solana and off-ramped through a local exchange are the cheapest option — typically 0.5–1.5% all-in. Wise is the cheapest non-crypto option at 0.4–1.5% with no FX markup. Bank wires and most traditional services cost 4–12% all-in when you include exchange rate markups.
In the US, transfers over $10,000 trigger automatic bank reporting to FinCEN. Gifts to foreign persons over $18,000 in 2026 require IRS Form 3520. Regular family support transfers are considered gifts, not deductible expenses. Crypto transfers follow the same gift rules. Consult a tax advisor if your annual remittance total is large or if you receive significant transfers.
At minimum, do a full review annually. But also spot-check when your send amount changes significantly, when you hear about a new provider, or when your recipient mentions receiving less than expected. Fee structures and exchange rate markups shift frequently — what was cheapest 18 months ago may not be today.
