For amounts over $5,000, Wise is the cheapest traditional option—charging 0% FX markup and a flat fee of roughly 0.4–0.65% of the transfer. Crypto rails (USDC on Stellar via Coinbase or Kraken) are often cheaper still, costing 0.1–0.3% total on large amounts. On a $15,000 transfer, Wise saves $300–600 versus a bank wire; crypto rails save an additional $50–100 over Wise.
Yes. Wise is regulated in the US (FinCEN, state licenses), UK (FCA), EU (De Nederlandsche Bank), and other major jurisdictions. Customer funds are held in segregated accounts with top-tier banks. Wise has processed billions in transfers. For amounts over $50,000, Wise may request source-of-funds documentation, which is standard AML compliance—not a risk indicator.
Splitting transfers rarely saves money and can create compliance issues. Wise and most providers charge a percentage-based fee, so splitting a $10,000 transfer into five $2,000 transfers costs roughly the same in fees. Intentionally structuring transfers to avoid reporting thresholds (e.g., keeping each transfer under $10,000 to avoid CTR reporting) is illegal in the US and most countries. Send the natural payment amount as a single transfer.
Most venues accept IBAN or local account transfers. Wise supports direct-to-IBAN payments in EUR, GBP, and 40+ other currencies—the recipient sees a regular bank transfer, not a Wise transfer. For crypto rails, your recipient converts USDC to local currency via a local exchange and then sends from their own local bank account. The venue never interacts with crypto directly.
Allow 5–7 business days for a first-time large transfer via any method. This covers KYC verification (1–3 days), the actual transfer (1–2 days for Wise, 2–5 for bank wires), and any recipient-side processing. For crypto rails to a new off-ramp exchange, add 2–3 days for the recipient's KYC. For transfers over $50,000, add another 2–3 days for enhanced due diligence documentation.
